As a small child, I would spend countless happy afternoons watching my Grandmother as she worked on her crochet by the fire. She had learnt when she was just a little girl, and when I was old enough to handle the yarn and crochet hook and follow a simple pattern she taught me.
I was soon addicted to making the beautiful, lacy snowflake like material and was keen to start working on a larger project. I dreamed of having an incredible blanket for my bed, in all the colours of the rainbow. My Grandmother explained to me How To Crochet Granny Squares.
Each square is formed from the middle outwards, and working in rounds, gets bigger and bigger until it is the required size. I could use as many different colours as I liked, as you can change colour within each Granny Square.
I spent all my free time crocheting Granny Squares. On the school bus, in classes when I was supposed to be writing- my crochet work came everywhere with me. Eventually I was finished and my Grandmother helped me join the squares. All this happened 25 years ago, and I still have my beautiful blanket of memories on my bed today.
