When I Think Of Wind Chimes

Jul 21, 2010

When I think of wind chimes, I picture relaxing and finding some peaceful time to myself relaxing in a garden like setting. Wind chimes provide us with a very comfortable and natural background noise, which is perfect when a person wishes to find some serenity after a really long day at work or a stressful situation. I grew up with a grandmother who collected all types of, especially aluminum wind chimes, along with many other things that she considered peaceful to her, including dragonflies, butterflies, and angels. In the spring and summer, she would wait for it to get cooler outside and then she would proceed to the garden and her arbored area where she kept most of the chimes. I do recall her being very religious, although she died when I was fairly young: only 9 years old. While planting and gardening, she would always say “The Lord speaks to me through the windchimes, and even though you may not be able to hear it, he helps me by blessing my garden.”

I have always heard that the art and creation of the wind chime originated in asia, and that it is a representation of harmony and the elements most commonly known as earth, air, fire, and water. Sound from the windchime comes from how it is constructed, and the wind literally provides a “force” for the metal to move in perfect synchrony to create such a beautiful rhythm as a result of this force. This is a perfect example of how science, physics, and nature are all connected in our universe!!
